I just found out I have a "bench warrant" out for my arrest. Is this something different than a regular warrant?

Yes. A bench warrant issues when a court already has jurisdiction over a person and that person fails to heed the court's orders, particularly an order to appear in court, or when that person violates his signed promise to appear when cited by a police officer. An arrest warrant issues when an affidavit has been filed that there is probable cause to believe someone has committed a crime. No affidavit is required for a bench warrant, only promises or actual orders; an affidavit is required for an arrest warrant.
