A woman from New Port Richey called the Sheriff's Office on the morning of July 25. She stated that she hadn't seen her neighbor in weeks, but she had been hearing her dogs whine. The woman also reported a strange odor coming from the home.

The remains of two deceased canines were found inside of the house at 7709 Atherton Avenue. A four-year-old Rottweiler named Sasha was found clinging desperately to life. She needed to receive serious medical attention.

Today she is apparently relatively happy at a kennel in the Pasco County Animal Services shelter. When she was discovered she was trembling and could barely stand up. Her eyes were coated with mucus and her claws were so long that they crossed over one another.

Sasha, along with the other dogs, had been left for weeks without any food or water. According to Pasco deputies, they were under the care of 48-year-old Michell Schratwieser. She was arrested on Thursday evening and charged with three separates counts of animal cruelty.

They were then holding her at the Land O'Lakes jail. This was in lieu of the $1,500 that was set up for bail. According to reports from deputies, the dogs were left alone in the home for a month. Apparently they were originally under the care of her ex-boyfriend.

When one of the dogs perished, she apparently panicked and left. Firefighters had to wear air packs to clean out the home. The remains of a Labrador/pit bull mix named Jessie and a German shepherd mix named Jordan were both found in the home. Sasha is now being treated for parasitic worms as well as several other health issues.

Some commentators have questioned whether the alleged ex-boyfriend would be held accountable for anything. The dogs were technically left in his care. Nevertheless, the individual who was taken into custody was charged with animal cruelty and that may be where the case ends. It is not known yet if the case will go to criminal court.

As for Sasha authorities aren't sure when she'll be ready to move into a new home, but she will eventually be cleared for adoption.
