An Aliso Viejo woman was arraigned on Friday August 2nd, 2013 for more than $200K in fraud. According to reports, Andrea Michelle Robinson set fires to her home and made several false claims to unlawfully obtain welfare, housing, insurance payments, and MediCal benefits. Additional accusations include receiving insurance claim payments without reporting the income to the mandatory agencies, fraudulent insurance claims for two residential and two vehicle burglaries, as well as frivolous spending of her illegally obtained money on high end products including name brand computers, purses, and a stroller for her dog.

An arraignment statement from the Orange County District Attorney’s office alleges Robinson had committed arson with the intent to commit insurance fraud on five separate occasions. Suspicion arising from the most recent arson led to an investigation that uncovered a string of possible insurance and public assistance frauds. Robinson faces four felony counts of arson, three felony counts of grand theft, two felony counts of perjury, a fraudulent attempt to obtain child aid, a sentencing enhancement for special circumstance and may face 41 years in state prison.

Types of Fraud

There are several different ways in which a person can be charged with committing fraudulent acts. The following are common types of fraud committed in the United States:
  • bankruptcy fraud
  • identity theft
  • securities fraud
  • mail fraud
  • tax fraud
  • wire fraud
It is alleged that Robinson was able to obtain the majority of her illegally obtained funds through insurance fraud, which is a very common fraud in California. Insurance fraud includes auto insurance, health insurance, life insurance, homeowners insurance, as well as several others. If a person falsifies information on an insurance policy and receives payments as a result, they can be convicted.
