San Jose police officers have identified a college student who was found dead as a result of a violent crime. The police released the identity of the body on Sunday August 4. They issued the victim's name and stated that the student was Kimberly Joyce Estrada, but they had not said much else at the time.

Estrada, who was a 19-year-old at the time of her death, was killed by gunfire a day earlier. While she was killed in a downtown drive-by shooting, police actually don't suspect that the gunfire was intended for Estrada herself. Rather they feel that she was unfortunately in the wrong place at the wrong time. There was probably some sort of hit called out on another individual and she was sadly killed instead.

She was riding in the passenger side seat of a friend's car when the shooting took place. The motor vehicle was somewhere near East San Salvador and South Second streets around 1:00 AM. Shortly after the 1:00 AM hour shots broke out that took Estrada's life. Fortunately the 21-year-old man who was driving the car was not injured. He is not a suspect in the shooting either. It doesn't appear as though he had anything to do with her death.

According to police officers Estrada's death marked the 30th homicide committed in San Jose to date. Since the murder is still under investigation there were few other details released about what had happened. When suspects are apprehended this information will probably be necessary to identify them and collect further evidence for putting together a proper case in court.

Most local nightclubs were closing around the time that Estrada was gunned down. This is generally a time during which off-duty law enforcement personnel volunteer for overtime pay. Many officers refer to it as the "Entertainment Zone" patrol, but no officers had been able to volunteer that evening. The police department required some officers already on patrol to work additional hours. Nevertheless, this forced overtime had nothing to do with Estrada's death according to San Jose police officers.
