Re-count of First Responders After Arriving on Scene of Trayvon Shooting

EMT- Direct:

Unit arrived 7:27 PM.  Directed to location of victim.  Cops were doing CPR on the victim.  Body was now face up.  No pulse.  Found the ice tea can in the hoodie pouch.   Gunshot wound in the chest.  Pronounced dead at 7:30.

Contacted Zimmerman who was siting in a police car.  He was responsive with no apparent difficulty understanding.  Injuries, swollen bloody nose and head.  They wiped him off to get a better look.  No "balance problems." He was not transported.

Cross Examination:

Nose was "very swollen"  and bloody.  Head bloody in back.  Photos of Z in the cop car show him pretty beat up.  Inquiry is whether the injuries are consistent with a bashing.   Went over each injury.  Defense went on about head injury consequences which this witness was not qualified to answer.   Z was not transported to the hospital because he was awake and responsive so it was his choice.  The cops said they would take him if needed.

Officer Tim Smith- Direct:

Heard "suspicious persons" dispatch.  En route, "Shots fired" update.   He went there and shined his car strobe light along the walkway.  He saw two people standing and one on the ground face down.  Made contact with Z who was standing.   In response to "what happened" to the victim on the ground?  Z  said  "He was shot, I shot him and I am still armed."  Z raised his hands and showed his weapon.  Cop cuffed him and took the weapon and holster.   Put him in the cop car.  No trouble walking or talking.   He saw the bloody nose and head.   Z was transported to station and on the way Z reported  "feeling lightheaded."  Declined to go to the hospital.  No trouble walking in the station.  No blood in cop car.  The security tape is played of Z walking into the station.  On the tape you see Z lean against the wall for support.   They go to the interview room and he's uncuffed.  He waited in there alone for 30-40 minutes till an interviewer came to speak to him.

Cross Examination:

Officer CV and then reviewed police procedure in a "shots fired" situation.   Saw Z on the side walk and Martin on the grass .   Saw Z's nose was bashed and eyes watery.  Z's behavior was meek and mild.  Z volunteered that he had been yelling for help and no one came to help him..  Said it twice....as if confused that no one had helped him.  Back of Z's jacket wet with pieces of grass.  Pants were darker in the back from wet, also with grass.

Next:

A nurse practitioner for discussions about Z's injuries.   Testimony is she was his regular treating med provider. DA brings up that In August 2011, Z  "can't sleep," that he tries exercise-Mixed Martial Arts but no help.  Medical history says he was in MMA three days a week. Turns out to be aerobics.  Presents this day, the day after the event, for sore nose and said he couldn't go back to work without medical clearance.  Symptoms:  denies dizziness, headaches, but has occasional nausea when he thinks of events of "last night."  Sore back from fight, cuts on head.  Stress from event but not suicidal.  Then they run down a physical exam:  He's  5'7'' and 205 pounds, alert,  2 cuts on the back of the head of 2 cm and .5 cm.  No stitches.  Eyes black on both sides.  Nose bruised between nose and mouth. Sacroiliac bruised. Consistent with falling or being thrown on back.   Nose was clinically "likely" broken.  No x-rays.

Cross Examination:

Defense showed the photos of Z from the night before and asked if that's what Z looked like when she saw him next day.  Yes, but he was cleaned up and some swelling had subsided.  Then comes What is swelling?  What is bleeding and where does blood go?  zzzzzzzzzzz  He then shows her photos of Z from event the night before for her to affirm all Z's injuries.  Injuries on sides and back of head are consistent with hitting concrete.  She felt he should go to a psychologist because of trauma.   He was already established with a psychologist.  Her exam confirmed everything he said had happened to him i.e. hit and thrown down.

Re-Direct:

DA says these lumps could be skull shape not swelling.  She responded that some swelling was resolved by body.  DA wants to say that Z's injuries were minimal, curable by Aspirin.
DA's last question was "What medical result would you expect from a gunshot to the heart?"
